While I still can't 100% recommend Better Flood Insurance / Flood Nerds due to a poor experience I had while they were updating their IT systems, they were very professional and communicative in assisting with my refund for a policy that quadrupled in cost and that I therefore canceled. I suspect that my cancelation experience was an anomaly.

Here is my original review--while I understand that they were updating their IT, I still had a poor experience as a paying customer who emailed a company several times with no response...yet they responded to me almost immediately after I posted one star reviews.

The team - I emailed with Tesha, Susie, and Robert - was very responsive during the process of enrolling me for flood insurance, but they vanished when I asked them to not renew my policy due to a quadrupling of the premium.

After three unanswered emails over several weeks to several people at Better Flood, Susie responded to me that they “cannot stop the renewal process from happening.” I don't understand how that's possible, especially several weeks in advance. That’s like your car insurance company telling you they can’t turn stop a renewal so you’re stuck with them forever. Very disappointing.

My mortgage company received a renewal bill and paid it, so I now have to spend a lot of time trying to fix a situation that should have been avoided in the first place. It was a big hassle that should never have happened.

I have had an excellent experience with Better Flood Insurance. I worked with Susanna Torrez, who was my primary contact. Susie was highly responsive, extremely helpful, and made me feel like I was her only customer. She remembered my name and account details every time we spoke, and went out of her way to make sure I had what I needed. We discovered that I'd overpaid my previous four years of flood insurance (by my own error of not sending in a form regarding primary residence) and Susie and the underwriters made sure I got a refund for each of those years. Pretty amazing experience, Better Flood! Thank you!

Wow - just wow! We could not be more impressed with the service we received from the folks at Better Flood Insurance.

As part of a mortgage refinance, the lender required we obtain flood insurance. Now, we’ve lived in this house for 15 years, and been through multiple financing/re-financing experiences, and this was the first time flood insurance was required (errant FEMA map in our case, but lenders can apparently require flood insurance if any portion of your property is in a designated flood zone). So we knew absolutely nothing about the process.

Being long-time USAA members, we contacted them to pursue NFIP insurance. As always, USAA took terrific care of us - but the policy quote took a bit of time to put together and came back much more expensive than we had hoped. Both USAA as well as our lender pointed out the potential benefits of a private flood insurance policy.

A little research pointed us in the direction of Better Flood Insurance Agency. Again, knowing nothing about the flood insurance market, I was more than a little leery about what I was getting into. But the Better Flood Insurance website sure made them seem accessible - and boy did we feel like we could benefit from a Flood Nerd or two!

I had a very reassuring chat with Caleb Montiel, and definitely came away confident that Better Flood Insurance was going to be able to help us explore our private flood insurance options. Soon after putting in our request for a quote, the founder of the company (Robert) reached out to us even though he was apparently on vacation - remarkable customer attention all around!!

By the next day we had a quote on a policy that was actually better than the NFIP policy, and at about 1/10th the cost! (And a bonus cool factor of it being with Lloyds of London!!) Keep in mind that timing was tight for us due to the way things had worked out with the NFIP policy in conjunction with our refinancing timelines, so finalizing everything was really important for us. Caleb had everything wrapped up for us by the following day - essentially 48 hours start-to-finish… For a better & cheaper policy… Just awesome work!
