This was my first tax season with this firm and unfortunately, it will be my last. I was excited to work with a local firm with such roots in the community. After my taxes were prepared, the CPA knew I was resolving a final matter before authorizing submission. When the issue was wrapped up, I signed the form to file, sent a message through TaxDome, and sent two emails. Over a two week period, no one returned my emails or messages, which is when I began calling. Each time I called (three times) I spoke with the receptionist and asked when my taxes would be filed. It wasn’t until the third time I called, ON TAX DAY, they still had not filed despite all of my communications letting them know the issue was resolved. I demanded to know why and when this would happen given that it was the deadline. Apparently, the CPA had sought an extension on my behalf. Tax day was the first time I had ever heard of this. It was never mentioned. Apparently extensions are routine, but it is likely malpractice to do so without my knowledge or consent. After tax day, I contacted the firm about my concerns with the lack of communication and follow through. The partner apologized but refused my request for a partial reimbursement. I was disappointed that the communication was so poor and that they did not recognize the risk they put me at by seeking an extension that they did not confirm with me or inform me of. They claim that extensions are no big deal, but since I didn’t know about it, I would have assumed my taxes were filed and they had all the information they needed—because they did—and then what? The extension would have lapsed in six months and I would be surprised to hopefully find out that my taxes were still not filed? Their track record on communication doesn’t leave a lot of confidence that someone would had reached out to me when the extension lapsed. If you want a CPA who communicates with you in a timely fashion, informs you of actions being taken related to your taxes, and rectifies a situation when they are in wrong, then I wouldn’t recommend KB to you.
