I had a triplex catch fire and a friend of mine referred me Raul with Trusted Public Adjusters. Thank god I used their services! Otherwise, I would not have gotten anything remotely close to what the ordeal will end up costing. Repair costs have gotten ridiculously expensive and you also have to deal with local government to get repairs done. It’s insane! There are costs involved that you don’t even consider until you start to do repairs. Raul took care of everything and stayed in constant communication with me while he was working with the Insurance Company. I’ve never done a review in my life, but in this case I felt it could help someone who finds themselves in this incredibly stressful situation. Using TPA is probably one of my best returns on investment ever!

SUMMARY: I used Trusted Public Adjusters (specifically, the owner Raul Amorin) for a significant insurance claim that has recently been resolved. Overall, I had an extremely positive experience working with Raul, while also enjoying an outcome more favorable in terms of payout than I expected. I valued his knowledge and professionalism through the process and I am convinced I received a higher payout than I would have on my own, even after considering payment of TPA’s fees.

DETAILS: I own a 2nd home on Sanibel, Florida that was destroyed by Hurricane Ian (Sept '22). We sustained significant wind damage, as well as having ~6ft of water in the house from a storm surge. The home was a complete loss and needed to be rebuilt due to the FEMA 50% rule. This is relevant to discussing insurance because it meant I would not have actual receipts from repairs that I could use during the claims process. Typically, the most effective way to fight an insurance company that understates the cost estimates is to show an actual receipt with a higher cost. But for my claim I would never have such receipts for repairs, so I anticipated a difficult process.

But my background is in engineering & business, and I consider myself extremely capable of dealing with insurance adjusters in both a technical & financial way. And I did have success myself. For instance, I negotiated with my flood insurer through multiple rounds and eventually got the full payout of my policy’s limit on my own.

I intended to also negotiate the wind policy as well. But this was with a different insurer and it quickly became clear to me that they were employing every trick in the book to limit payout (delay / deny / defend). Frankly, I was reaching the point of frustration and anger in dealing with them that I knew would be counterproductive. I was initially inclined to go the legal pathway. I found a lawyer through a personal connection and had a conversation where they convinced me that a public adjuster would likely be a more productive than my legal options. And the lawyer recommended Raul.

When I first connected with Raul, I immediately felt comfortable with him. He listened well and quickly understood where I was in the claims process and what the key issues were. He answered my questions in detail and made sure we were aligned on expectations. We quickly negotiated an arrangement on fees that I felt was reasonable. For instance, there was a certain aspect to my claim that I knew was unlikely to require much effort and so I was not inclined to want to pay a % of those funds to an adjuster. But I was happy to pay a fair price in other areas where I know there would be work and expertise required for success. And in the end, I was very pleased with the return I received versus fees I paid for the PA services.

My process began with Raul doing his own Xactimate estimate of the damages. Raul kept me informed through the process and I was pleased he sought out and incorporated my own feedback in ways that improved my claim. We did several revisions before we were satisfied with the result. From there Raul took the lead in negotiating with the insurer.

The negotiation process is something that requires patience. There was a period of back and forth for a few weeks where Raul gradually received increasing offers from our insurer. Ultimately, we settled at an amount that I thought was satisfactory, and that was definitely higher than I felt the insurer would have offered me as the owner if I had negotiated myself. I am not 100% sure I can explain why this is, but it seems to me that insurers feel that homeowners are less informed and therefore can be more easily pushed around. And I think a good public adjuster is just more successful because they have better knowledge of what is a reasonable outcome to expect for the coverage you have, more experience at negotiating, and deeper expertise at justifying why things should cost more.

In the end, I believe we had a fair outcome in a reasonable time frame and I think Raul was the key reason we had this result.
